Brunch Boxing Explores: Fight Fax Rankings Deep Dive

The recent partnership between the WBA and Fight Fax has sparked significant discussion in the boxing world. In terms of boxing, the discussion was particularly centered around the accuracy and validity of the rankings produced by Fight Fax. Traditionally, Fight Fax had been known for its extensive database of fight records and boxer profiles. With their return to the boxing landscape and now, with their foray into rankings, Fight Fax finds itself under a microscope.

One of the most surprising revelations came from Paul Magno of BoxingNews.co, who pointed out that Canelo Alvarez, the former undisputed super middleweight champion and current unified super middleweight champion, was ranked as the #36 super middleweight in the world. This placement is raised eyebrows amongst boxing fans and observers, considering that Canelo is universally recognized as the top super middleweight in the world, having dominated the division for years (David Benavidez notwithstanding).

The Fight Fax rankings have been met with skepticism. In response to growing concerns, Fight Fax released a statement to Brunch Boxing through their official Twitter account, stating, “We know that the current formulas which we have implemented are in need of optimization.” They also provided a link to a FAQ article on their website (link provided at the bottom of this article), addressing some of the technical and methodological aspects behind their ranking system. Despite this, many in the boxing community remain perplexed by the rankings.

To better understand the situation, Brunch Boxing decided to do a deep dive into the current Fight Fax rankings, focusing on key fighters in each weight class. The Fight Fax rankings have left many within the boxing community baffled, and understandably so. With top fighters like Tyson Fury, Jermell Charlo, Caleb Plant, Brandon Figueroa and Teofimo Lopez Jr. unranked, and others like Canelo Alvarez, Naoya Inoue, Anthony Joshua, Shakur Stevenson, Vasyl Lomachenko, Tim Tszyu and Errol Spence Jr. placed far below their expected standings, questions abound about the criteria and algorithms used to generate these rankings. Some fighters are not listed in their correct weight class, despite being champions in those divisions, some are not listed in any division and Mexican boxing legend “Gallo” Estrada is nowhere to be found on the site at all. While Fight Fax acknowledges the need for optimization in their system, the current rankings raise concerns about their reliability and accuracy.

As Fight Fax works to refine their methodology, Brunch Boxing will watch closely, awaiting adjustments that more accurately reflect the talent and achievements of the sport’s top fighters. Until then, the rankings will likely remain a hot topic of discussion, debated by fans and analysts alike. Brunch Boxing has reached out to Fight Fax for comment about their reemergence in boxing.
