Stephen Fulton Jr. (21-1, 8 KOs) vs Carlos Castro (30-2, 14 KOs)
What’s at stake: No title at stake
Analysis: It’s a clash of two big, strong featherweights. Fulton is a master boxer that is not afraid to dog it out on the inside. Castro is also a very good boxer, though not to the skill level of Fulton.
The biggest question going into this fight is how has Fulton recovered from suffering the first loss of his career. Fulton has not been shy about expressing his frustration with the business side of boxing (#PrelimGang), but all reports were that Fulton was locked in inside of the ring. Fulton himself said that this has been the best training camp he’s ever had for this fight.
Fulton holds significant advantages over Castro in terms of skills, speed, ring IQ and big fight experience. Castro has not delivered at the very top level and has shown himself to not have top shelf punch resistance in recent fights. He was knocked down in the early rounds in both of his losses. Fulton has shown himself to be pretty durable throughout his career. While he was stopped by Naoya Inoue in his last fight, you could make the argument that Fulton was the victim of poor refereeing, which led to him taking a flush, unprotected shot. Not many fighters would survive that situation.
The move up in weight was long overdue for Fulton, as he had been at 122 his entire career. Fulton says he is coming for the knockout and with him feeling bigger and stronger at his new weight class, expect him to deliver on that in an action packed affair.
Gambling Odds
Fulton Jr.: -950 ML, +330 KO/TKO, -210 Decision
Castro: +500 ML, +1400 KO/TKO, +950 Decision
Fight To Go The Distance: -360 Yes, +250 No
Prediction: Fulton Jr. KO/TKO
Roiman Villa (26-2, 24 KOs) vs Ricardo Salas (19-2-2, 14 KOs)
What’s at stake: No title at stake
Analysis: Roiman Villa takes on Mexico’s Ricardo Salas in a 10-round battle of two hard-hitting welterweights. Villa is looking to rebound from a stoppage loss against Jaron “Boots” Ennis last year. He’s very confident going into this bout, saying, “I did everything that I needed to do and I’m ready to get this victory. This is ending in a knockout.” Salas, meanwhile is trying to make a name for himself in his first fight outside of Mexico. Salas went down twice in his bout against Ruben Aguilar, although he did make it to the final bell. Salas is expecting a toe-to-toe battle in the ring. That favors, the bigger, longer, stronger Villa. This fight is ending in knockout and expect Salas to be on the receiving end of it.
Gambling Odds
Villa: -700
Salas: +480
Prediction: Villa KO/TKO
Jonathan Lopez (16-0, 12 KOs) vs Richard Medina (15-2, 8 KOs)
What’s at stake: No title at stake
Analysis: Unbeaten Puerto Rican prospect Jonathan Lopez squares off against Richard Medina in an eight-round super featherweight bout to open the telecast. This fight is more of a showcase for Lopez, the Canelo team fighter. He’s shown good promise and skill in his previous bouts and has shown improvement under Eddy Reynoso. Medina is a very durable fighter, but can be outboxed. He doesn’t carry much pop. The skill gap is too wide in this fight. Expect Lopez to get some rounds in, but win convincingly.
Gambling Odds
Lopez: -1600
Medina: +940
Prediction: Lopez Decision
Lawrence King (16-1, 13 KOs) vs Vaughn Williams (12-1, 8 KOs)
What’s at stake: No title at stake
Analysis: King is the heavier puncher in this light heavyweight matchup. As the younger, fresher fighter, King is the heavy favorite in this bout. Williams struggled mightily against a journeyman with a losing record in his last bout. While Williams has been durable in his career, the skill gap is too wide for him to survive his first eight-rounder.
Gambling Odds
King: -1200
Williams: +720
Prediction: King KO/TKO
Yoenli Hernandez (4-0, 4 KOs) vs Jose Sanchez Charles (21-5-1, 12 KOs)
What’s at stake: No title at stake
Analysis: Hard-hitting Cuban middleweight, Yoenli Hernandez is in there with the Mexican gatekeeper, Jose Sanchez Charles. Sanchez Charles is the guy you call when you want to get your guy some good work, but not lose. Hernandez should be able his vast skill, size and power advantages to get the knockout.
Gambling Odds
Hernandez: -2000
Sanchez Charles: +1180
Prediction: Hernandez KO/TKO
Bek Nurmaganbet (11-0, 9 KOs) vs Joshua Conley (17-6-1, 11 KOs)
What’s at stake: No title at stake
Analysis: Bek Nurmaganbet returns to the ring after a year layoff in a get-back fight against Joshua Conley. Conley is very undersized in this bout, as he’s been a career middleweight. Not expecting him to show much resistance against the more talented Nurmaganbet. Nurmaganbet has adjusted well to the pro game and has started to get his opponents out of there early. This shouldn’t be any different.
Gambling Odds
Nurmaganbet: -3500
Conley: +1600
Prediction: Bek Nurmaganbet KO/TKO
