Rewatching Ortiz vs Bohachuk
Round 1
Ortiz comes out with a controlled aggression and it’s effective. Then he goes to moving back backwards behind the jab and he starts to get touched and dropped. He goes full aggression after that and isn’t as effective but wasting a lot of energy
Bohachuk is staying calm and taking the shots he can get. Never changing the intensity just working. When Ortiz allows him to come forward you really start to see him working effectively.
Round 2
Ortiz starts aggressive again and begins to work the left hand to the body. Mid way through the round Ortiz goes back to a more defensive posture looking to be a little more slick and behind the jab.
Bohachuk isn’t giving anything big to Ortiz. He is keeping his guard tight. He was less effective this round but Ortiz looks like he is trying to preserve energy by going to the defensive style.
Round 3
Vergil and Bohachuk have a phone booth fight in the 3rd. Both working to get leverage to push the other one back. Vergil wins this battle and is still punishing the body. Vergil working at a good pace but every once in a while throws a fastball.
Round 4
Vergil goes back to the defensive style but stays more in front of Bohachuk allowing Bohachuk to work comfortably. The fight is a battle of steady non flashy work for Bohachuk and big eye catching shots from Ortiz.
Round 5
More boxing from Vergil but it works its way to phone booth fight again. Bohachuk doing very well using his legs to gain him a little distance to work. Ortiz finds really effective offense late with some big shots.
Round 6
The range Vergil is choosing to stay out allows Bohachuk just work continuously. Bohachuk using a single step back to create range when needed. Vergil landed some big shots but the majority of the round he was out work by Bohachuk. Ortiz has not been consistently going to the body. The game plan for this fight from Ortiz and Robert Garcia does not appear clear in this fight.
Round 7
Bohachuk is the more energetic fighter at this point. He looks fresh and Vergil looks like he is waiting for a 2nd wind. Bohachuk has a moment when he is just teeing of on Vergil.
Round 8
Ortiz dropped again on a left hook he didn’t see coming during an exchange. Ortiz energy just isn’t there like it was early. The adrenaline and emotion from getting dropped again gave Vergil a boost in round where he went all out to get it back from Serhii.
Round 9
First time Bohachuk looked a little tired in the fight. Ortiz doesn’t have the same speed or explosion but he is effective in the round.
Round 10
Bohachuk energy has dipped bad and Vergil had his best round boxing. Ortiz moved more and Bohachuk had to chase which lead to him walking into jabs. Ortiz started to work off the jab.
Round 11
Ortiz continues to box well late and he rocks Bohachuk with the uppercut. Ortiz didn’t use the uppercut enough in this fight. Bohachuk survives and starts to land a little late. Ortiz boxing is very effective in the 4th quarter of this fight and this is something I didn’t appreciate on the first viewing. Ortiz found something out about himself.
Round 12
This was the fight of the year so far. Ortiz used the whole bag to get this W. Borachuk raise his stock in that performance.
After watching it live I had the fight 6-6 but with two 10-8 rounds in favor of Bohachuk
After the rewatch I saw a completely different fight and had it 8-4 Ortiz
Ortiz strategy wasn’t clear early but he showed everything as the fight went on and ended up being superior everywhere in the ring. A great performance that showed exactly who he is when he is faced with adversity. I thought Ortiz showed limitations when I saw it last night but after the 2nd viewing I realize he showed all his dimensions.
