The reported undisputed super middleweight bout between Canelo Alvarez and Puerto Rican prospect Edgar Berlanga on September 14 in Las Vegas, Nevada, may feature a notable addition. Sources tell Brunch Boxing that the postponed PBC on Prime bout between former IBF super middleweight champion Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) and the undefeated Trevor McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) is being considered as one of the supporting bouts.
Originally slated for August 17, the Plant-McCumby fight was delayed due to a cut on McCumby’s eye. However, sources with firsthand knowledge of McCumby’s situation have informed Brunch Boxing that McCumby is set to return to the gym on Monday to resume training. Initially, McCumby will avoid sparring to prevent reopening the cut. Should he successfully navigate the rest of his camp without any setbacks, he will be ready for the September 14 card.
Plant, who is looking to bounce back after his March 2023 defeat to longtime rival David Benavidez, is eager to return to the ring. McCumby, who last fought on a ProBox TV card in January, is seeking to maintain his undefeated record and add a huge name to his résumé.
The situation is fluid and as always in boxing, plans are subject to change. Brunch Boxing will see how the situation develops. McCumby is expected to appear on the Brunch Boxing program next month.
