WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman has announced that the WBC will review the controversial decision in Saturday night’s bout between the now former WBC super featherweight champion, O'Shaquie Foster and its new champion, Robson Conceicao. In a social media statement Sulaiman said of the decision “The ratings committee will discuss such result in order to rank Foster who lost his championship. The WBC ring officials committee will review the WBC REMOTE SCORING REPORT , the official scorecards and a panel will review the tape of the fight.”
Conceicao was declared victorious via split decision. Scores were 116-112, 115-113, 112-116. Most observers had Foster winning the fight going away, including our own unofficial scorer, Ezra Hernandez of Brunch Boxing, who had it 120-108 in favor of Foster.
While not available to the judges during the round and also unofficial, the punch statistics heavily favored Foster. According to CompuBox, Foster outlanded Conceicao in total punches 109-76. Foster also landed 25% of his total punches to an even more paltry 11% by Conceicao. Conceicao did throw more punches than Foster by a wide margin. Conceicao threw 701 punches to Foster’s 435. However Conceicao outlanded Foster in just 2 rounds of the 12 round title bout.
Foster was visibly upset after the official decision was announced. The WBC is expected to render a decision after their investigation is complete. The expectation is that the organization will order an immediate rematch between the two combatants.
