Ginjiro Shigeoka Underwent Emergency Surgery After Suffering From Subdural Hematoma, Remains In Critical Condition

Former IBF Strawweight Champion Ginjiro Shigeoka is in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery for an acute subdural hemorrhage sustained during his rematch against Pedro Taduran on Saturday. The Japanese Boxing Commission confirmed on Monday that the 25-year-old required immediate medical intervention following the bout, which saw him collapse unconscious in his corner shortly after the final bell.

Shigeoka was carried out of the ring on a stretcher and rushed to a hospital in Osaka, where doctors performed a craniotomy in an attempt to relieve swelling on his brain. He remains unconscious and under close observation at a private medical facility.

Shigeoka was seeking to reclaim the IBF strawweight title he had lost to Taduran in their previous encounter. After the final round concluded, Shigeoka lost consciousness before he could leave the ring, prompting medical staff to intervene immediately.

Shigeoka’s career, though tragically cut short, had been marked by prodigious talent and rapid ascension. As an amateur, he won five national titles and compiled an extraordinary record of 56 wins against just one loss—an unofficial defeat to his older brother, Yudai Shigeoka. The two had been scheduled to face off in the final of a domestic tournament but chose not to fight each other. Ginjiro’s corner threw in the towel as the opening bell rang, registering a symbolic forfeit.

Turning professional in 2018, Shigeoka debuted with a third-round technical knockout victory over Sanchai Yotboon. His rise continued, and by April 2023, he captured the interim IBF strawweight title with a commanding performance over former champion Rene Mark Cuarto. Shigeoka dropped Cuarto in both the seventh and ninth rounds before stopping him late in the ninth.

In October 2023, Shigeoka seized full champion status after defeating then-titleholder Daniel Valladares by TKO. He successfully defended his title once, beating Jake Amparo, before losing it to Taduran in a major upset last year.

The Japanese Boxing Commission announced that due to the severity of his brain injury, Shigeoka must retire from the sport. His final professional record stands at 11 wins, 2 losses, with 9 victories by way of knockout.

Ginjiro Shigeoka’s health remains the foremost concern, and the boxing world is united in hoping for his full recovery.

重岡選手は担架でリングから運び出され、大阪市内の病院に緊急搬送されました。病院では脳の腫れを軽減するための開頭手術（クラニオトミー）が行われましたが、現在も意識不明の状態が続いており、民間病院で厳重な監視下に置かれています。

この試合は、重岡選手が前回敗北を喫したタドゥラン選手からIBFミニマム級王座を取り戻すためのリマッチでした。試合終了後、リングを離れる前に意識を失ったため、すぐに医療スタッフによる対応が必要となりました。

重岡選手のキャリアは短期間で幕を閉じることとなりましたが、その才能と急速な成長は多くの人々に強い印象を残しました。アマチュア時代には全国大会で5度の優勝を果たし、戦績は56勝1敗という圧倒的なものでした。唯一の敗北は実兄・重岡優大選手との対戦によるもので、2人は国内トーナメント決勝で対戦予定でしたが、実際には対戦を回避し、ゴングが鳴った直後に銀次朗選手の陣営がタオルを投入して棄権としました。

2018年にプロデビューを果たした重岡選手は、サンチャイ・ヨットブーン選手を3ラウンドTKOで下して鮮烈なスタートを切りました。その後も快進撃を続け、2023年4月には元王者レネ・マーク・クアルト選手を7回と9回にダウンさせ、9回終了間際にTKO勝利を収めて暫定IBFミニマム級王座を獲得しました。

そして2023年10月には、当時の正規王者ダニエル・バラダレス選手との再戦でTKO勝利を収め、正規王者に昇格。王座防衛戦ではジェイク・アンパロ選手に勝利しましたが、昨年のタドゥラン選手との試合で王座を失いました。

日本ボクシングコミッションは、今回の重篤な脳の負傷を受け、重岡選手が引退を余儀なくされたことを正式に発表しました。彼のプロ戦績は11勝（9KO）2敗となりました。

現在、重岡銀次朗選手の健康が最優先事項であり、ボクシング界全体が彼の完全な回復を願って一致団結しています。
