Former welterweight title contender Mykal Fox is set to make his second appearance of 2024, fighting on the undercard of Jeter Promotions’ November 9 event at the Maryland Live Casino in Hanover, Maryland. The card, headlined by the WBC FECARBOX Super Middleweight Championship bout between Immanuwel Aleem and Juan Macias Montiel, will feature Fox (23-4, 5 KOs) taking on fellow veteran Alfonso Olvera (13-9-3, 5 KOs) in gulag fight between two experienced fighters.
This fight marks Fox’s second bout this year after returning from a 21-month hiatus. In his first fight back, Fox displayed his characteristic boxing skills, shaking off the ring rust to unanimously outpoint Donald Ward. This performance has set the stage for Fox’s continued efforts to return to title contention in the welterweight division, where he once found himself on the doorstep of championship glory.
Fox’s first significant shot at a title came in 2021, when he faced Gabriel Maestre for the interim WBA Welterweight title. The fight, which many fans and experts believed Fox had clearly won, became infamous for the controversial decision that awarded Maestre a unanimous victory. Particularly egregious was a 117-110 scorecard submitted by judge Gloria Martinez Rizzo, which sparked outrage in the boxing community.

Following the backlash, fans conducted an investigation that uncovered racially charged social media posts by Rizzo. Additionally, Maestre’s status as a WBA-sponsored fighter raised questions about the fairness and integrity of the bout. Prominent voices in the sport, including promoter Lou DiBella, demanded a “federal investigation of boxing and the WBA” in the wake of the controversy.
Despite the uproar, both Rizzo and Maestre continued their careers in boxing, while Fox’s return to the ring took longer to materialize. Fox eventually fought again in October 2022, losing a unanimous decision to Egidijus Kavaliauskas in a competitive bout.
Struggling to land another major opportunity, Fox returned home to the DMV area and teamed up with Jeter Promotions to reboot his career. This partnership has allowed Fox to get back to his roots, with the focus now on staying active and fighting his way back into the title picture. As Fox prepares to face Olvera on November 9, he looks to continue building momentum and re-establish himself as a serious contender in the welterweight division.
