In a Thursday press conference, Naoya Inoue, the undisputed super bantamweight champion, officially confirmed his December 24 title defense against unbeaten Australian contender and IBF mandatory Sam Goodman. The fight, set to take place at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena, will headline a card that also features a defense by WBO Bantamweight Champion Yoshiki Takei. The event will be streamed live in the U.S. on ESPN+.

The bout will mark Inoue’s third title defense of his undisputed super bantamweight crown this year. The 31-year-old champion, also known as “The Monster,” will be looking to secure his 10th consecutive knockout. During his May bout, Inoue overcame an early knockdown to stop former two-division world champion Luis Nery in six rounds. His momentum continued in September when he secured a seventh-round TKO over former junior featherweight champion TJ Doheny.

Now, Inoue’s attention turns to Sam Goodman (19-0, 8 KOs), a hungry and undefeated challenger from Australia who is also fighting for the third time this year. Goodman, has risen rapidly through the super bantamweight ranks. In 2023, he registered key victories, including a decision over former champion TJ Doheny and a points win against then-unbeaten talents Ra’eese Aleem and Zhong Liu. In his most recent fights, Goodman stopped Mark Schleibs in four rounds in March before outpointing previously unbeaten Thachtana Luangphon in July.

In addition to the main event, fans will be treated to an exciting co-feature as Yoshiki Takei (10-0, 8 KOs) looks to defend his WBO Bantamweight Championship against an opponent to be named. Takei, a rising star in the division, will be looking to extend his unbeaten streak and further establish himself on the world stage.

Another compelling fight on the undercard will see hard-hitting welterweight Jin Sasaki (18-1-1, 17 KOs) take on veteran Shoki Sakai (29-14-3, 15 KOs). Sasaki is known for his knockout power and will look to add another stoppage victory to his record. Meanwhile, Sakai, an experienced fighter with over 45 professional bouts, will aim to use his ring savvy to spoil Sasaki’s ambitions.
