The much talked about, highly anticipated all-Aussie showdown between bitter rivals Nikita Tszyu and Michael Zerafa is being targeted for January 16 in Australia, sources tell Brunch Boxing.
The bout will finally see Zerafa (34-5, 22 KOs) face off against a member of the famed Tszyu family, nearly five years after his ill-fated clash with Tim Tszyu fell apart amid scheduling disputes and controversy. This time, it’s the younger Tszyu brother stepping up to settle the score in what’s expected to be one of the biggest domestic fights in recent Australian boxing memory.
Originally slated for December, the fight was briefly in jeopardy after Nikita Tszyu (11-0, 9 KOs) was involved in a car accident earlier this month. Fortunately, the injuries were described as minor, though Tszyu will take a bit of extra time off before returning to training, prompting the move to the new January date.
The clash will be contested at a catchweight of 157 pounds, slightly above the junior middleweight limit, accommodating both fighters’ preferences. Both Tszyu and Zerafa are riding momentum into the matchup — each coming off explosive first-round stoppage victories in August.
