10/21/2024

PBC on Prime Video Recap, Results and Grades. Plus results from the rest of the boxing weekend: Murtazaliev makes a statement, Tapia-Saavedra war and Scull-Shishkin title tilt highlight a great boxing weekend.

The eyes of the boxing world were fixed on Orlando, Florida this weekend as Premier Boxing Champions put on their first of many PBC on Prime Video non-ppv event, headlined by the explosive IBF Junior Middleweight Championship bout between Bakhram Murtazaliev and Tim Tszyu. On the same card, Cesar Mateo Tapia and Endry Saavedra engaged in a violent, knockdown-filled slugfest. The event was promoted by TGB Promotions. The main event was promoted in association with No Limit Boxing and Main Events.

Elsewhere in Germany, the boxing world had its eyes on another IBF Championship bout, this time a vacant super middleweight title bout between William Scull and Vladimir Shishkin.

Brunch Boxing was there to cover every punch, knockdown, and story behind the gloves. Here’s a full breakdown of the event, from results to grades, plus results from around the world in this action-packed, drama-filled weekend of boxing.

In the headliner of PBC’s first non-PPV event on Prime Video, Bakhram Murtazaliev defended his IBF Junior Middleweight Championship in stunning fashion, dismantling Tim Tszyu in just three rounds at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida. Murtazaliev dropped Tszyu four times before Tszyu’s corner threw in the towel at 1:55 in the third round. This was Murtazaliev’s first title defense, and it sent shockwaves through the division.

Murtazaliev’s dominance began in round two, where a counter left hook floored Tszyu for the first time. Despite Tszyu’s warrior spirit, which has earned him a following in Australia, the Russian champion proved too much. Two more knockdowns followed in the same round, and Murtazaliev finished the job in the third with another brutal left hand that sealed the fight.

After the bout, a euphoric, but humble Murtazaliev celebrated his victory, saying, "When I landed that first big shot, I knew how hard it was,” said Murtazaliev. “Tszyu is a real warrior and I hope one day we can work together and spar and help each other to grow."

After the bout, a shocked and dejected Tszyu told the media, "Every time I step into the ring I leave it all in there. Things didn't go to plan and the better man won tonight. No excuses. After the first shot, things started not going according to plan. That's part of boxing, you get hit and reactions get slower. Bakhram is the man at 154."

Murtazaliev has announced himself on the world stage and will be highly sought after. Murtazaliev is now a name to watch in the junior middleweight division.

What’s Next:

For Murtazaliev, he has a plethora of options. Tszyu reportedly had an agreement in place to face Erickson Lubin in December, if he were victorious. It remains to be seen if Lubin has interest in facing Murtazaliev instead. If Lubin is not interested, names like Jesus Ramos, Charles Conwell, Nikita Tszyu and Andreal Holmes will be in the mix.

Tszyu has to go back to the drawing board and rebuild himself, likely in his home country of Australia.

In the co-main event, rising Cuban prospect Yoenis Tellez delivered a seventh-round stoppage of the heavy-handed Johan González. Tellez dominated the later rounds, scoring three knockdowns in rounds six and seven. After a series of powerful hooks, the referee waved off the fight, signaling Tellez’s emergence as a serious player in the junior middleweight division.

What’s Next:

Tellez is now fully in the mix in the loaded junior middleweight division. Tellez is climbing up the rankings, and bigger fights against top contenders could be on the horizon. He’s ranked within the WBC, WBA and WBO.

The middleweight war between Mateo Tapia and Endry Saavedra was a show-stealer, with both men hitting the canvas in a back-and-forth battle that ended in a majority draw. Saavedra put Tapia down twice in round two, but Tapia came back with a vicious knockdown of his own in round five. Saavedra dropped Tapia a third time, bringing the total knockdowns to four in this violent bout. The final scorecards, one favoring Tapia at 94-92 and two calling it 93-93, left fans clamoring for a rematch.

After the bout, Saavedra said of his opponent: "I thought I could have gotten him out of there because I'm a Mexican warrior. I did everything I could and left everything in the ring. I was surprised he kept getting up, especially after the second knockdown. But he's a Mexican and he wasn't going to go out easily."

What’s Next:

A rematch is likely, given the excitement of the first bout and the unresolved nature of the finish. Fans, media and the fighters themselves want a rematch of this absolute war.
