On Friday, September 20, boxing fans are in for a treat as Jaime Munguia steps back into the ring, making his Top Rank debut against the undefeated Erik Bazinyan at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. This super middleweight bout, headlining an action-packed Top Rank on ESPN card, will be Munguia’s first fight since his loss to Canelo Alvarez in May, a defeat that marked the first blemish on his previously unblemished record. Now, he looks to bounce back with a statement victory, but he’ll have to overcome the dangerous Bazinyan, who has yet to taste defeat.
Calling the action will be Bernardo Osuna, Timothy Bradley Jr., and Mark Kriegel. What’s at stake: No title at stake
Analysis: For Munguia, it’s a chance to regain momentum and reestablish himself as one of the top contenders at super middleweight after his defeat to Canelo. For Bazinyan, this is the biggest fight of his career—a victory over a name like Munguia would catapult him into the upper echelon of the division.
Jaime Munguia is known for his aggressive, come-forward style and ferocious power. Despite his loss to Canelo, Munguia remains one of the most dangerous punchers in the division. He thrives in exchanges, often overwhelming opponents with a relentless assault. However, his defense has been a question mark, as he tends to take a lot of punishment in pursuit of his knockout victories. Against a disciplined, technically sound fighter like Bazinyan, Munguia will need to be cautious not to leave himself open to counters.
Erik Bazinyan, while not as well-known, is a highly skilled, undefeated fighter with excellent footwork and timing. He doesn’t possess Munguia’s raw power, but he has a more refined approach, using angles and feints to create openings. Bazinyan’s ability to control distance and frustrate his opponents with his jab could be key to neutralizing Munguia’s aggressive style.
The big question is whether Bazinyan can handle the pressure and power that Munguia brings. If he can withstand the early storm and force Munguia into a more tactical fight, Bazinyan has a chance to outbox him. However, Munguia’s power will always be a factor, and if Bazinyan can’t keep him off, a stoppage could be inevitable.
