Donaire To Continue Career, Petition Sanctioning Bodies For Immediate Shot

Sources tell Brunch Boxing that former multi-weight world champion Nonito Donaire has officially petitioned all four major sanctioning bodies for an immediate title opportunity following his razor-thin loss to Seiya Tsutsumi.
Donaire (43-9, 28 KOs), the Filipino boxing legend and future Hall of Famer, dropped a split decision to Tsutsumi in their hotly contested WBA Bantamweight Championship bout on December 17 in Tokyo. Despite the official result, the performance has only strengthened Donaire’s belief that he remains a legitimate threat at the championship level.
At 43 years old, Donaire delivered what many viewed as one of the most inspiring late-career efforts in recent memory. He nearly stopped Tsutsumi in a dramatic fourth round, badly hurting the champion and appearing on the verge of a knockdown before the bell saved Tsutsumi. From there, the fight evolved into a tense tactical battle, with Tsutsumi rallying late to sway two of the three judges.
According to CompuBox statistics, Tsutsumi barely retained his WBA Bantamweight Championship after overcoming a stirring challenge from the WBA interim titlist. Donaire inflicted his most significant damage in round four, opening a cut on the bridge of Tsutsumi’s nose, bloodying him, and nearly scoring a knockdown in the closing seconds. Tsutsumi preserved his title in the second half of the fight by mounting several late surges.
The bout was extraordinarily close by the numbers. The fighters were separated by three or fewer total punches in eight of the 12 rounds. Tsutsumi led the CompuBox round-by-round breakdown 8-4 by sweeping the final four rounds and held a 48-37 edge in total connects and 25-20 advantage in power connects over those final frames. Overall, Tsutsumi earned a razor-thin 131-126 margin in total connects.
Tsutsumi led 67-47 in landed jabs and held clear advantages in accuracy—20% to 11% overall and 19% to 11% in jab precision. However, Donaire told a different story with his power and aggression. The former champion was the more active fighter, averaging 59.7 punches per round to Tsutsumi’s 54.3, and dominated the power category, landing 79-64 power shots with superior accuracy (29% to 22%). Official scores read 117-111 and 115-113 for Tsutsumi, with one judge seeing it 116-112 for Donaire.
Speaking with Brunch Boxing, Donaire was resolute in his belief that he deserved the decision, and emphatic about his future.
“I feel like I won the fight, but was very unlucky to not get the decision,” Donaire said. “That’s no knock on Tsutsumi. He performed well. He is a true warrior. I just feel I did enough to get the job done. What I’ve definitely shown is that I can hang with any of the champions at bantamweight. I am NOT done. You haven’t heard the last of Nonito Donaire. I will become champion again.”
The circumstances surrounding the title picture further complicate matters. Tsutsumi was originally scheduled to face Antonio Vargas, the reigning WBA Bantamweight Champion. Vargas was forced to withdraw following the passing of his mother after a five-year battle with cancer. As a result, Vargas was named champion-in-recess and mandated by the WBA to face the winner of Donaire–Tsutsumi within 120 days.
Whether Tsutsumi can meet that deadline remains uncertain. Following the Donaire fight, Tsutsumi underwent a four-hour surgery to repair a broken nose, casting doubt on his ability to fulfill the WBA mandate. If Tsutsumi is unable to proceed, Donaire has made it clear he is ready to step in.
Sources also tell Brunch Boxing that Donaire has formally petitioned the IBF, WBO, and WBC in search of an alternative title pathway. Donaire’s manager, Rachel Donaire, emphasized that this push has been years in the making.
“For two years, we went to the conventions. We asked for rankings,” she told Brunch Boxing. “Maybe they thought Nonito was joking, but he was serious. This fight against the Ring Magazine number one, the performance, the punch numbers, the scores—he showed he still can be in that ring at the highest level.”
Donaire’s resurgence began earlier this year when he returned in June after nearly a two-year layoff and captured the interim WBA Bantamweight title with a decisive victory over Andres Campos. Now, following another elite-level showing on one of boxing’s biggest stages, Donaire is making it clear that retirement is not imminent, and that another world title reign remains firmly within his sights.
