Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) brings the biggest fight night of the year to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, as Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) returns to defend his WBA Lightweight Championship against “The Reaper” Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-1, 10 KOs). The event, promoted by TGB Promotions and GTD Promotions in association with ProBox TV, features a stacked nine-fight card.

The co-main event sees WBA Junior Welterweight Champion Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela making his first title defense against Gary Antuanne Russell in a bout expected to be an all-action war.

Elsewhere on the card, undefeated former WBA champion Alberto Puello faces crafty southpaw Sandor Martin in a technical battle for the WBC Junior Welterweight title, while Cuban phenom Yoenis Tellez attempts to add a signature win to his resume against former unified champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams.

Let’s dive into everything you need to know about this must-watch event with The Ultimate Guide to Gervonta Davis vs.  Lamont Roach Jr.

What’s At Stake: Davis’s WBA Lightweight Championship

Pre-fight Buildup: Somebody Lying

Despite being an overwhelming underdog, Roach has embraced the challenge. Confident and undeterred, he dismisses the “B-side” mentality that often plagues Davis’s opponents.

“I don’t care about being the underdog or the favorite. Either way, I’m gonna win.” — Lamont Roach Jr.

Davis, however, remains unfazed, issuing an ominous warning.

“I advise you not to talk so much… it can be bad for you.” — Gervonta Davis

Roach believes Davis has never faced an opponent with his defensive sharpness and ring IQ, but Davis insists Roach will feel his power early.

“Come March the first, we dance. Everybody knows how I get.” — Gervonta Davis

Path to Victory: Gervonta Davis

Davis cannot fight at his normal pace, with his normal punch output. He has to throw more punches, apply his trademark intelligent pressure and set traps for his power shots.

Path to Victory: Lamont Roach Jr.

Roach must dictate and push the pace against Davis. As the slightly longer fighter, Roach’s jab should be used early and often to maintain distance. Roach has to use his footwork to frustrate Davis, and counter off his mistakes. Davis is a notoriously economical puncher, so Roach could outwork him and steal rounds.

Fight Analysis: Roach is technically sound with a sharp jab and excellent defensive movement. However, Davis has shown time and again that patience is his deadliest weapon. Roach will need to fight the perfect fight to avoid Tank’s devastating power, but Davis is exceptional at closing the show once he finds an opening. This fight could play out similarly to Davis’s bout against Leo Santa Cruz.

Gambling Odds

Davis: -2000 ML, -470 KO/TKO, +460 Decision.

Roach: +1040 ML, +1800 KO/TKO, +1600 Decision.

Total Rounds: Over 8.5 at +104, Under 8.5 at -132.

Fight To Go The Distance: Yes at +340, No at -550.

Total Knockdowns: Over 1.5 at -160, Under 1.5 at +100; Over 2.5 at +210, Under 2.5 at -310.

Final Thoughts: Roach is confident, but Davis is a generational finisher who doesn’t need many chances to land. Roach’s durability will be tested early, and if he can’t keep Davis honest, this one won’t last.

Prediction: Davis KO/TKO

Jose Valenzuela (14-2, 10 KOs) vs. Gary Antuanne Russell (17-1, 17 KOs)

What’s At Stake: Valenzuela’s WBA Junior Welterweight Championship

Pre-fight Buildup: Imposter Syndrome

Valenzuela is coming off a career-best win over Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz but doesn’t believe Russell has earned this title shot.

“I worked my ass off to get here, and this is a bit of a handout for him.” — Jose Valenzuela

Russell, however, is determined to prove that his first loss was a fluke.

“I took my loss on the chin. It’s all about how you bounce back. That’s what defines a true champion.” — Gary Antuanne Russell

Path to Victory: Jose Valenzuela

Valenzuela has to use counterpunching, preferably to the body, to stop Russell’s onslaught. Valenzuela’s jab and movement will be key to controlling distance, forcing Russell into mistakes.

Path to Victory: Gary Antuanne Russell

Russell must apply relentless, intelligent pressure to smother and overwhelm Valenzuela. It would behoove Russell to make it an inside fight and not allow Valenzuela to use his movement.

Fight Analysis: Russell is an aggressive pressure fighter, but his style can leave him open to big counters. Valenzuela, a skilled southpaw with serious power, has the tools to exploit that. However, if Russell can push the pace, his high-output attack could overwhelm Valenzuela. Valenzuela’s chin is going to be tested.

Gambling Odds

Valenzuela: -108 ML,+500 KO/TKO, +170 Decision.

Russell: -124 ML, +145 KO/TKO, +450 Decision.

Total Rounds: Over 10.5 at -142, Under 10.5 at +112.

Fight To Go The Distance: Yes at -118, No at -108.

Total Knockdowns: Over 0.5 at -135, Under 0.5 at -115; Over 1.5 at +135, Under 1.5 at -210.

Final Thoughts: This is a dangerous fight for both men, but Russell’s power and relentless pressure should break Valenzuela down late.

Prediction: Russell KO/TKO

Alberto Puello (23-0, 10 KOs) vs. Sandor Martin (42-3, 15 KOs)

Photo Credit: Esther Lin/Premier Boxing Champions

What’s At Stake: Puello’s WBC Junior Welterweight Championship

Pre-fight Buildup: The Funky Technicians

Both fighters are defensive-minded, slick boxers, making this a fascinating chess match.

“Sandor Martin is going to be a tough challenge. He’s got a smart and complicated style.” — Alberto Puello

“Puello is a great fighter who wants to stay undefeated, and that makes me more motivated.” — Sandor Martin

Path to Victory: Alberto Puello

Puello has to set the pace and establish his jab. Puello must also use his herky-jerky style to keep Martin from finding a rhythm.

Path to Victory: Sandor Martin

Martin must use his movement to stay elusive and frustrate Puello. Martin has to capitalize on every counter opportunity.

Fight Analysis: Martin has the footwork and defense to trouble Puello, but Puello is the more active fighter. In a tactical fight, activity often wins rounds.

Gambling Odds

Puello: -140 ML, +440 KO/TKO, +130 Decision.

Martin: -106 ML, +700 KO/TKO, +160 Decision.

Total Rounds: Over 10.5 at -430, Under 10.5 at +300.

Fight To Go The Distance: Yes at -400, No at +280.

Total Knockdowns: Over 0.5 at +140, Under 0.5 at -210; Over 1.5 at +250, Under 1.5 at -390; Over 2.5 at +2900, Under 2.5 at -9000.

Final Thoughts: Expect a close decision with Puello’s slightly higher work rate making the difference.

Prediction: Puello Decision

Yoenis Téllez (9-0, 7 KOs) vs. Julian Williams (29-4-1, 17 KOs)

Photo Credit: Esther Lin/Premier Boxing Champions

What’s At Stake: The vacant Interim WBA Junior Middleweight Championship

Pre-fight Buildup: Out With The Old, In With The New?

Yoenis Téllez may not be a household name yet, but those who have followed his rise in the junior middleweight division know just how dangerous he can be. The Cuban prospect has shown power, speed, and an aggressive style that has made him one of the division’s most intriguing young fighters.

Tellez, an explosive young Cuban, is looking for a breakout win.

“When people talk about the 154-pound division, they’ll mention this Cuban.” — Yoenis Tellez

Williams, a former champion, is eager to prove the young prospect isn’t ready for the big stage.

“The stakes are higher here. There is definitely a difference between fighting C+ contenders and a world-class fighter like me.” — Julian Williams

Path to Victory: Yoenis Tellez

Tellez has all of the physical advantages in this bout. Tellez must use his speed, movement and length to control distance, and break the older Williams down with power shots.

Path to Victory: Julian Williams

Williams must lean on his skills and big-fight experience to test Tellez’s composure. The best chance for Williams to pull off the upset is to test Tellez’s endurance and take him deep into the fight.

Fight Analysis: Tellez is the younger, fresher fighter, but Williams is vastly more experienced. If Williams can survive the early storm, he could make it interesting late.

The fight between Williams and Téllez will likely come down to execution. Téllez will try to impose his power and aggressive approach, looking to break Williams down early. Williams, on the other hand, will aim to showcase his well-rounded boxing ability, using his jab, movement, and ring IQ to frustrate the younger fighter.

Gambling Odds

Tellez: -1600 ML, -600 KO/TKO, +550 Decision.

Williams: +800 ML, +1200 KO/TKO, +2500 Decision.

Final Thoughts: Tellez’s power and athleticism should prove too much for the aging Williams.

Prediction: Tellez KO/TKO

Jarrett Hurd (25-3-1, 17 KOs) vs. Johan Gonzalez (34-4, 33 KOs), 10 rounds, middleweight

Photo Credit: Esther Lin/Premier Boxing Champions

Gambling Odds

Hurd: -108 ML, +260 KO/TKO, +280 Decision.

Gonzalez: -124 ML, +185 KO/TKO, +320 Decision.

Prediction: Hurd Decision
