With a packed boxing weekend dominated by huge cards put on by Top Rank Boxing and Matchroom Boxing, some bouts and events around the world are flying under the radar.
Puerto Rican boxing fans are in for a treat as former world champion Subriel Matías headlines a thrilling event at the Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. The event, dubbed “Taínos vs. Aztecas,” is being promoted by Juan Orengo’s Fresh Productions Boxing and will showcase a clash of Puerto Rican and Mexican boxing talent.
Matías, the Puerto Rican power puncher will look to bounce back in his home country after losing his IBF Junior Welterweight Championship to Australian Liam Paro in June. He was subsequently unceremoniously dumped by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing after the loss. Matías, known for his relentless pressure and thudding knockout power, will face Mexico’s Roberto Ramírez (26-3-1, 19 KOs) in a 10-round junior welterweight bout. Ramírez comes into this bout following a TKO victory over Rodolfo Flores Moreno in December 2023.
At the Maryland Live Casino in Hanover, Maryland, Mykal Fox is set to make his second appearance of 2024, fighting on the undercard of a Jeter Promotions event. The card, headlined by the WBC FECARBOX Super Middleweight Championship bout between Immanuwel Aleem and Winifred Harris Jr., will feature Mykal Fox against Yainel Alvarez.
Over at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, ProBox TV presents a nine-fight card, headlined by a welterweight bout between Nicklaus Flaz and Christian Gomez. Also on the card is a lightweight special attraction bout between Joseph “JoJo” Diaz and Abraham Montoya.
Brunch Boxing previews Saturday’s action.

What’s At Stake: No title at stake
Analysis: Matías returns to his home crowd in Puerto Rico, hungry for redemption after losing his world title and subsequently being dropped by Matchroom Boxing. Known for his aggressive, come-forward style and devastating knockout power, Matías aims to reestablish himself as a top contender. Ramirez, a seasoned Mexican fighter with a high KO ratio, brings a tough style and enters with confidence following a December TKO win. Ramirez is capable of delivering powerful counters, but he will need to neutralize Matías’ relentless pressure.
Gambling Odds
Matias: -3500 ML
Ramirez: +960 ML
Final Thoughts: Matías’ power, combined with his home-crowd advantage, makes him the heavy favorite. Ramirez’s toughness should provide resistance, but Matías is likely to control the pace.
Prediction: Matias KO/TKO
Kevin González (27-1-1, 14 KOs) vs. Abimael Ortiz (10-1-1, 5 KOs)
What’s At Stake: No title at stake
Analysis: González has only one loss and is known for his technical ability and boxing IQ. Ortiz, though less experienced, is a rising Puerto Rican talent with solid power. González will likely use his superior footwork and ring generalship to keep Ortiz at bay. Ortiz, however, may attempt to bring the fight to close quarters to offset González’s reach advantage.
Gambling Odds
Gonzalez: -300 ML
Ortiz: +230 ML
Final Thoughts: With his experience and skill set, González is favored to wear down Ortiz. Expect a tactical battle, with Ortiz potentially looking for a knockout punch if he falls behind.
Prediction: Gonzalez KO/TKO
Kissimmee, Florida
Nicklaus Flaz (13-2, 9 KOs) vs. Christian Gomez (23-4-1, 21 KOs)

What’s At Stake: No title at stake
Analysis: Flaz’s technical skills will be tested against Gomez, who has a high KO rate and a reputation for delivering thrilling performances. Flaz will need to avoid Gomez’s power shots and rely on his footwork and defensive skills to keep Gomez from dictating the pace. This fight could hinge on whether Flaz can avoid a knockout.
Gambling Odds
Flaz: -1200 ML
Gomez: +730 ML
Final Thoughts: Gomez’s power makes him dangerous, but Flaz’s boxing ability gives him the edge. If he keeps his distance and avoids trading with Gomez, Flaz can outbox him over 10 rounds.
Prediction: Flaz Decision
Joseph Diaz (33-6-1, 13 KOs) vs. Abraham Montoya (22-6-1, 14 KOs)

What’s At Stake: No title at stake
Analysis: Diaz, a former champion, has struggled with consistency. Facing Montoya, who has respectable power, Diaz will look to control the bout with his technical skills. Montoya may try to push Diaz into deep waters, hoping for a late stoppage, but Diaz’s experience gives him an advantage.
Gambling Odds
Diaz: -215 ML
Montoya: +174 ML
Final Thoughts: Diaz should have enough experience and skill to outpoint Montoya, though Montoya will look for a big punch to turn the tide. Expect a chess match, with Diaz edging out the rounds.
Prediction: Diaz Decision
Hanover, Maryland
Immanuwel Aleem (21-3-2, 13 KOs) vs. Winifred Harris Jr. (22-2-1, 10 KOs)

What’s At Stake: Aleem’s WBC FECARBOX Super Middleweight Championship
Analysis: Aleem was expected to face Juan Macias Montiel, who pulled out of the bout. In steps Harris, who has given good work to a decent level of opposition. Aleem has settled into the domestic scene after some setbacks at the world level.
Aleem’s past experience at a higher level gives him an edge, and he’ll likely use his movement and power to keep Harris on the back foot. Harris has shown resilience but lacks the experience to deal with a fighter of Aleem’s caliber.
Final Thoughts: Aleem should be able to control the fight and, if he finds his rhythm, will likely take a decision.
Prediction: Aleem Decision
Mykal Fox (23-4, 5 KOs) vs. Yainel Alvarez (3-5-2, 1 KO)
What’s At Stake: No title at stake
Analysis: Mykal Fox is a quality operator and good technical boxer. He has every advantage in this bout against the overmatched Alvarez. Fox will look to establish his long jab early and put shots together. Alvarez, a late replacement opponent, is not expected to offer much resistance.
Final Thoughts: Fox should have no trouble with Alvarez. Expect an early stoppage.
Prediction: Fox KO/TKO
